Band 4+: Some people believe that unpaid community service should be compulsory in high school programmes (for example, working for a charity, improving the neighbourhood or teaching sports to younger children). Do you agree or disagree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

There are many values from working for a charity. For this reason, many people support the view that students should be made mandatory voluntary services. From my perspective, I do not agree that we should force all teenagers to do unpaid work.

Recently, the student has too much pressure from their study in school, without requiring to do work for any social organization. High school student usually spends eight hours a day in class. Besides, they have to do homework, lesson revision, prepare for the next lecture. After that, in their free time, they should engage friends or play sport and something they want to do. However young people need to balance their life between study and relaxation. Therefore, they have many years to work ahead after graduation, take volunteer work early is not necessary now.

On the other hand, it is not a good idea to force someone to do something they do not like. The community will not completely have benefit because of obliging students working for local charities. I think It goes against the value of freedom and fair society when requiring a group of people to do something. Also, young people who do this can lead to resentment in themselves and do with low morale, which will make a bad outcome for society. Unpaid community service is only available for people who want to do it, nobody is forced to work anything, especially unpaid work that’s absolutely how life works.

In conclusion, students have the right to choose to do voluntary work or not when they have spare time, in my opinion, we should not make it mandatory.
