Some people avoid eating meat and fish. Their reasoning consists not only of their health, but also their belief that this also benefits environment as a whole. In my opinion, their point of view is completely understandable. Personally, I support this opinion and try to not eat meat from time to time.
Firstly, it’s important to discuss, why excluding meat and fish from your diet is beneficial for your health. To understand this, we should look a little bit in history. Only 100 years ago, population of the Earth was just around 1 billion people. And it was easier to feed everyone, there was a much smaller demand for products such as bread, milk, fruits and vegetables, and obviously, meat. However in just 100 years Earth’s population has grown more than 8 times! And because we’re living in the era of globalization, where farmers need to produce more and more every year, it becomes extremely hard to maintain the quality of products they produce. They have no choice but to choose quantity over quality. Lots of chemicals are being used to make cows, sheeps and other animals grow faster. Besides that, chemicals are used while transporting meat for long distances. In the end, there’s almost a 100% chance that we consume all those chemicals while eating the meat we buy from our local supermarkets. The situation with fish is even worse. Considering all the problems that have been already mentioned, we have to face one more issue. Seas and oceans are being polluted, and this has a harmful effect on fish. Speaking of myself, I avoid eating meat fish, unless I’m sure of its high quality. For instance, my parents always buy meat directly from farmers who use no chemicals on their animals.
Second argument of people who do not eat meat or fish, even though it makes sense, seems less reasonable for me. Generally, we can say that if people eat less meat, the supply will decrease after the demand. Thus, farmers will not need to kill so many animals and destroy so much soil. But this approach is rather idealistic. To make this happen, bigger steps need to be made. A single vegetarian family will not change the situation. Millions of people have to start saying “no” to meat and fish. Although something will change, this change will not happen in an instant. Another reason why this approach does no seem viable to me, is because the population of our planet keeps growing, and the demand for food will never decrease.
In conclusion, I can say that this opinion has a decent reasoning, despite some details not letting it to become a perfect approach for everyone. In some periods of my life, I also try to eat meat in moderation, because I know eating it everyday strains my digestive system a lot. So, I deem that eating meat is okay, but the moderation is key, just like in everything in our life.
