Fashion, which is a dominant field among various kinds of industries, plays a significant role in the contemporary society. The vital existence of fashion in people’s current lives is widely accepted, however, the remaining of the societies are at the opposite side, considering fashion as an unnecessary expenditure that wastes time and creates financial burden. While I hold the view that such clothing items may lead to negative effects due to the inappropriate choices and perspective, I’m inclined to lean towards the former assertion.
On the one hand, fashion is a means of self expression and personality representation. Different pieces of clothing enable people to convey the messages of adeptness, creativity, characteristics and emotions, thereby such people can communicate their individuality through their choice of attire. This can be seen in the case that in many workplaces or important events such as London Fashion Weeks, people tend to wear formal clothes or creative outlets to showcase their innovation and adpetness of fashion. Besides, fashion also has positive impacts on the economy of a nation given the provision of numerous job opportunity, solving the unemployment problems and contributing to the government budget.
On the other hand, it is undeniable that the rapid development of fashion in the contemporary world will encourage the consumerism and materialism, later affecting the environment. Fashionistas and shoppaholics, for example, are those who always keep up with the latest trends, resulting in fast fashion and superficial values. As a result, the amount of fashion waste increases considerably, causing much pollution in the environment through the production and destruction process. In addition, the craze for fashionable clothing can influence other people, especially teenagers who do not have comprehensively conscious about fashion and finance, may get into financial strain.
However, the negative effects of fashion can be mitigated if people are aware of appropriate and sustainable fashion. Wearing clothes that are well-fitted for themselves boosts their confidence and open more opportunities in life. Moreover, being conscious about superficiality helps people avoid conforming negative societal standards.
In conclusion, it is undeniable that fashions is a means of nonverbal communication and it also offer economic benefits to the host countries while there are some existing demerits. Nevertheless, I believe that the upsides are outweights the downsides if people have conscious consumerism and knowledge.
