There are those who opine that a country can benefit from organizing events for international sports competitions. This essay discusses both sides of the argument and why I believe that this trend can bring benefits to the country.
There are understandable reasons why some feel that it is advantageous for a country to become the host of international sports events. First of all, this is a perfect opportunity for the host nation to promote its image to the world. For example, if people watched the Tokyo Olympics, they often see the amazing Mount Fuji in the background and get the desire to go there. Furthermore, job opportunities in the tourism industry will be created for local people because international tourists will travel to the destinations where the sports competitions take place. As a result, the local citizens can have a higher standard of living.
On the other hand, others advocate the view that organizing worldwide sporting events can have adverse impacts on the country. The first reason is that to be qualified for hosting such events, a country has to ensure they have the sporting facilities and accommodation to serve athletes attending from many parts of the world. In other words, the government has to spend an immense amount of money constructing these facilities and this may put a heavy pressure on their economy. Another reason is that these facilities can be wasted if they are not reused after serving the event. For example, many stadiums were constructed to serve Olympic Athens in 2004 and since then, they have become degraded because of the lack of maintenance rendering them useless to hold events.
In conclusion, I believe that both sides of the argument have their positive points. However, I am inclined to believe that it is beneficial for a nation to become the host of worldwide sporting events because the opportunity to promote the country’s image to the world and the improvement of local citizens’ standard of living outweigh the pressure on the country’s economy and the prodigality of letting sporting facilities become degraded.
