I agree and disagree at some points with this view. I believe that the Internet has both benefits and harms and that changes according to how you manage it. If you can balance the usage of the Internet and your social life then the Internet can be a new way to socialize but otherwise it can turn you into an unsocial person. The Internet may have negative effects on social interactions of a person by making him addicted to the contents specialized for his wishes thanks to the algorithm or showing communication with long distance relationships and AI chatbots much safer and easier. Despite the negative effects, it can also be a great place to meet new people from different backgrounds because you can reach people worldwide.
Firstly, the internet has the potential to cause people to escape real life relationships by creating a virtual world which seems like a safe place for people to interact. There is a whole world created on the Internet which offers you the chance to connect with everyone and everywhere. That’s a really attractive offer and causes people to spend hours on the internet unconsciously. The more time you spend on the Internet means the less time you spend socializing. The people who can’t get social satisfaction because of the internet addiction are more likely to find an alternative to their social environment on the internet. They can do this either with finding a long distance friend or talking with an AI. The interaction with a long distance friend or AI isn’t the same as communicating with a real friend. In one of them you are just chatting and you can create a whole new personality and show this to the other person but that’s not possible in real life. That’s why these people forget how to have a proper relationship in real life by time.
Also, there are various sites created for meeting with new people on the internet and thanks to these sites many people find new friends and have a chance to meet people from different countries. There are even some cultural exchange projects which are online and that’s a good opportunity for people to learn new perspectives. There are also lots of cases in which people trust the person they meet online too much and get deceived by them. We should never forget that we know the person we are talking to online as much as they want and should never share our personal information. To summarize, the internet can be a place to socialize and learn from people from different backgrounds when it is used carefully.
In conclusion, the Internet offers both advantages and disadvantages when it comes to social interactions. On one hand, it can be a valuable tool for meeting new people and learning about different cultures. On the other hand, excessive use can lead to a detachment from real-life relationships and may result in unhealthy interactions with long-distance friends or AI. To make the most of the Internet’s potential, it’s crucial to balance online activity with face-to-face socializing and to approach online relationships with caution.
