Through the course of the 20th ans 21st centuries smoking has became one of the most widespread harmful habit; therefore, reducing the percent of smoking citizens is a daunting task for local authorities. Some people say that the best way to discourage smoking is to introduce restrictions to do it in public places, when others finds these regulations insufficient. Overall, I think prohibition smoking in public places is not enough for solving the problem, more strict laws should be passed.
Above all, forbidding smoking in public places can truly discourage some people for continuing maintenance of this habit. As a matter of fact, the vast majority of smoking people do it, while they are walking, so the habit becomes far less comfortable. For instance, according to the survey, wich was conducted among smoking citizens in France 10 yeas ago, 80 percents of surveyed after passing this law would start thinking of stoppling smoking.
On the other hand, forbidding smoking in public places can be insufficient for achieving prominent changes. People will still have abilities to smoke at home; moreover, controlling obedience is remaining a very complicated task continuously. For example, in 2025 in Europe only 40% of the streets were fully guarded or recorded by cameras. Hence, these restrictions wouldn’t have great impact on the smoking citizens, because people would float the rules easily and stay unpunished.
To addition to that, the smoking culture will still exist even with restrictions to do it in public places. In our society smoking can be interpreted as a cool behavior, because of the films and advertisement, which have been influencing on our personality since childhood. Consequently, many kids and teenagers start smoking, though they are disallowed doing it by laws and can’t smoke in public places. In general, 60 percent of all smoking European citizens have started it under 18 years of age. If smoking was not introduced as a cool activity, many people would never try it.
In conclusion, although, restrictions to smoke in public places can discourage some people to continue maintaining this habit, it wouldn’t have a big impact on public health and smoking will still be a widespread activity, thus many people’s physical condition will be damaged.
