While some hold the opinion that the most significant environmental issue is the extinction of several species of plants and animals, proponents of this view argue that there are more pressing issues in the environment. Although both schools of thought provide their rationales, I agree more with the latter perspective due to some reasons that are explained in this essay.
On the one hand, it is undeniable that each plant and animal brings about numerous merits for human lives and their habitats. Firstly, they have played a crucial role in most medical research, helping researchers to invent drugs and solutions to treat diseases. A compelling example is that monkeys have been utilized for testing novel vaccines before applying them on residents, reducing the risk of allergies. Furthermore, the loss of several species also takes a toll on natural processes, thus many predators would lack prey for their diet and enhance the risk of extinction of some herbivores. This, as a result, would pose a threat to the biodiversity.
On the other hand, opponents to the previous view claim that some environmental problems are more crucial. Initially, due to the increase in the number of industrial plants, the atmosphere and environment are deteriorated. This would have detrimental effects on human well-being. Additionally, the need for dwelling land and the expansion of factories lead to deforestation, leading to climate change and some menaces. If people cut down too many trees for their activities, there would be an increase in the temperatures and some disasters would happen.
In conclusion, while the loss of fauna and flora would bring about many problems, other environmental-related issues are more significant.
