Many individuals believe that the invention of the Net brought people together, while others argue that communities have become more lonely. In this essay, I will discuss both perspectives on this trend. Firstly, I will explore the first view, and secondly, I will weigh up the alternative perspective.
Some proponents argue that digital networks have changed our ways of communication in a positive way because the world is a global village now. Now they can easily interact with each other without needing to travel to their friends and family. For example, those who live far away from their family, can easily communicate with their family members (such as father, mother, siblings, and wife) using applications like WhatsApp and Telegram. In addition, supporters believe that social media users can easily share their updates on the applications. Some people post pictures and videos of different events of their lives on the Web such as Instagram and Snapchat.
On the other hand, the alternative view is that the internet is harming the public as they are facing more isolation than ever. The societies cannot celebrate local events as residents are busy on the Web. Most of them consume random content throughout the day, which leaves them with no time to interact with their neighbours. For instance, some youngsters watch YouTube shorts and Instagram reels for several hours continuously without even talking to anyone. Similarly, proponents believe that individuals do not participate in co-curricular activities, for they like to dedicate more time to social media. Hence, various activities in communities have rapidly decreased, which has led residents to isolation.
In summary, society has gotten closer and distant at the same time due to internet. In my opinion, it depends upon the type of user who uses the social network platforms that the usage is harmful or beneficial. We should limit our screen time that we devote to the Net, and this step will help us to establish balance in our lives.
