Overtourism has become a serious problem in many popular destinations around the world. Streets beaches and tourist attractions can become overcrowded making life harder for local residents and damaging the environment. Although travellers have an important role I believe governments are mainly responsible for preventing overtourism.
Travellers can help by making more responsible choices. For example they can travel during the low season choose less popular destinations and respect local customs. They can also avoid littering and support local businesses. If more tourists behaved responsibly the pressure on popular destinations could be reduced.
However governments have greater power to manage tourism. They can limit the number of visitors to certain attractions, introduce tourist taxes and protect natural areas from excessive development. They can also improve public transport and encourage tourists to visit less crowded regions. These measures can have a much greater impact than individual choices.
In conclusion I do not agree that travellers are mainly responsible for preventing overtourism. They should certainly behave responsibly but governments have the authority and resources to create effective solutions. Therefore preventing overtourism should be a shared responsibility, with governments providing clear rules and travellers respecting them for local communities and future generations alike.
