There is no denying the fact that punishment is the most effective method to prevent criminal behavior. While it is a commonly held belief that all lawbreakers deserve to go to prison, there is also an argument that opposes this idea, especially for those who commit minor crimes. This essay will analyse this topic from both points of view and express my opinion.
On one hand, respecting the law is mandatory for every individual, and there must be a penalty for breaking it. In other words, raising awareness among people about the existence of punishment will help to decrease the crime rate. In addition, locking up people with a high tendency toward crime and isolating them from innocent citizens is beneficial to the whole community. For example, not everyone can defend themselves against a person with strong criminal tendencies, especially children or women.
On the other hand, some people deserve a second chance and should be spared from severe sentences. It is also possible to say that making them contribute to local community activities might make them feel guilty and adjust their attitude. Moreover, some individuals may face severe circumstances that lead them down this path. For instance, a desperate person who has a significant amount of debt may find that such a situation drives them to steal.
In conclusion, there are no easy answers to this question. On balance, however, I tend to believe that we have to look closely at every lawbreaker’s intention and the reasons behind what they did, and after that, apply a suitable penalty for them.
