The importance of social media limits for children seems to be a widespread concern all around the world. It is believed that children should be banned from using social media platforms until they reach the age of 16. I partly agree with this view because while social media can cause several problems for young people, it also provides many educational and social opportunities.
On the one hand, governments and parents can have the power to protect children from the negative effects of social media. What I mean is that children are more likely to be affected by cyberbullying and harmful informations on the internet. Therefore, governments should introduce strict regulations to prevent young people from accessing dangerous contents. Moreover, spending too much time on social media can negatively effect children’s academic performance and mental health. For example, many teenagers spend several hours scrolling through social media instead of studying or doing physical activities. Thus, banning these platforms for children under 16 can help them develop healthier habits.
On the other hand, social media can also contribute to children’s education and social development. To make it clear, these platforms provide opportunities for students to communicate with their friends and improve their knowledge about different subjects. To give an example, watching educational videos and following useful accounts can help students to understand difficult topics more easily. Furthermore, social media allows young people to learn about different cultures and improve their communication skills. However, completely banning these platforms might prevent children from reaching these benefits. Hence, the importance of social media for education and communication should not be underestimated.
In conclusion, as stated above, I partly agree with the statement that children should be banned from using social media until the age of 16 because altough these platforms provides several educational benefits, they can also expose young people to serious online risks. Therefore, parental supervision and certain restrictions may be more benefical than a complete ban.
