Some people believe that reading newspapers and watching television news programs is merely a waste of time because much of the information presented appears irrelevant to ordinary people’s daily lives. While this perspective may seem understandable to some extent, I strongly disagree with it, as news media plays an indispensable role in informing citizens, raising public awareness, and strengthening society as a whole.
Admittedly, modern news coverage can sometimes overwhelm audiences with an incessant stream of information, much of which appears detached from their immediate concerns. News outlets frequently devote extensive attention to political conflicts, economic instability, climate crises, and international affairs that may seem distant from the realities of everyday life. Consequently, individuals whose interests primarily revolve around entertainment or sports often perceive political analysis and social reporting as tedious or irrelevant. Furthermore, the rapid expansion of digital media has intensified this issue by exposing people to a constant barrage of updates and sensational headlines, making news consumption mentally exhausting for many individuals.
Nevertheless, dismissing the news as unimportant overlooks the vital function journalism serves in contemporary society. Far from being a source of mere entertainment, news media provides accurate, timely, and reliable information that enables people to make informed decisions and better understand the increasingly complex world around them. Rarely has access to trustworthy information been more important than during times of crisis. The COVID-19 pandemic clearly demonstrated this reality, as continuous media coverage of infection rates, government policies, and public health guidelines significantly enhanced public awareness and contributed to limiting the spread of the virus. In addition, quality journalism strengthens democratic societies by holding governments and powerful institutions accountable. Through investigative reporting, the media exposes corruption, highlights social injustices, and ensures that important policy decisions remain transparent and subject to public scrutiny.
In conclusion, although some individuals regard news consumption as a time-consuming and irrelevant activity, I firmly believe that news media remains an essential pillar of modern society. Beyond simply delivering information, it promotes social awareness, encourages accountability, and equips communities to respond more effectively to both immediate and long-term challenges.
