Band 8+: Some people think schools should group pupils according to their academic ability, but others believe pupils with different abilities should be educated together. Discuss both views and give your opinion?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Nowadays, educational equity and children’s sustainable development are widely discussed topics around the world. Some people argue that schools should organize classes based on students’ academic abilities, while others advocate for mixed-level classes. From my perspective, I strongly agree with the former idea. This essay will examine both viewpoints and provide the rationale behind my opinions.

Despite the potential for educational equity and social cohesion that a class with diverse students can bring, it may have detrimental effects on children’s long-term development. High-achieving students may find their potential limited, while those performing at lower levels could experience increased academic pressure, potentially leading to mental health issues. Moreover, having students of widely varying abilities in the same class significantly increases teachers’ stress in terms of preparation and can adversely affect overall class efficiency. Therefore, compared to slogans like “educational development” and “social peace,” the sustainable development of children and their final learning outcomes are evidently more crucial.

Non-streamed education has existed for many years. In the past, within a slower-paced academic environment, it was believed that high-achieving students could motivate their peers to learn. However, as times have changed, its drawbacks have become increasingly apparent. There is now a growing desire for a new model to replace it.

In today’s fast-paced learning environment, streamed education can cater to the diverse needs of students and is more conducive to their long-term development. Streaming allows teachers to tailor their instruction to different academic levels, facilitating better absorption of knowledge and enhancing classroom efficiency. For high-achieving students, it fosters competition among peers, stimulating their learning potential. Conversely, lower-achieving students can learn without the pressure of competing with more advanced peers, thus reducing academic stress. For example, many language schools organize classes into different proficiency levels to help students improve their language skills effectively.

While mixed-level classes promote inclusivity, streamed education tailored to students’ abilities can enhance learning efficiency and support long-term academic development. Adapting educational practices to meet diverse learning needs remains crucial for ensuring both equity and optimal educational outcomes for all students.
