Band 8+: Some people think schools should group pupils according to their academic ability, but others believe pupils with different abilities should be educated together. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Some people argue that teaching students separately can lead to greater academic progress, while others believe that educating all learners together, regardless of their academic level, is more effective. Although studying in mixed-ability groups encourages competition and faster progress, I firmly believe that teachers should focus on individual needs to ensure a thorough understanding of the curriculum.

Admittedly, learning in a mixed group may help students develop teamwork and communication skills. Acquiring knowledge together fosters healthy competition, motivating learners to work harder and improve their performance to achieve better results. However, this kind of motivation can also cause stress, insecurity, and the feeling of being “worse than others.” Sometimes students hesitate to ask questions that may seem silly, which leaves their doubts unresolved.

On the other hand, teaching students according to their abilities can significantly enhance the learning process and help every learner fully grasp the material. Each student can ask questions freely, while teachers can identify weaknesses and provide targeted support. Moreover, experienced mentors can give detailed feedback and advice to reduce mistakes and boost confidence. This approach enables students to progress at their own pace and gain the knowledge they truly need.

To sum up, while some people believe that all students should be taught together, I am convinced that dividing learners based on their academic ability is a more effective way to ensure steady progress and deeper understanding.
