Nowadays, education plays an important role in children’s future. Education is the key to a successful society. Some people believe that schools should group students based on their academic ability, while others argue that children of different abilities should study together in the same class. This essay will discuss both views before giving my opinion.
On the one hand, selecting students according to their academic ability can improve the overall quality of education. In ability-based classes, teachers can focus on a specific learning level without adjusting lessons for weaker or stronger students. As a result, talented students can make more progress and achieve higher scores. For example, subjects like mathematics and science often benefit from practical and challenging learning materials. In addition, weaker students may feel less pressure when studying with students of a similar level.
On the other hand, studying together with students of different abilities also has several advantages. Mixed-ability classes help students develop communication and social skills. Students can learn from one another by sharing knowledge and experiences. Furthermore, stronger students may help weaker students understand difficult subjects, while weaker students can gain motivation from healthy competition. For instance, in subjects like mathematics and science, stronger students can support others by sharing notes and explaining concepts, which can improve the overall performance of the class.
In conclusion, although selecting students according to their abilities may provide more focused learning, studying together in mixed-ability classes encourages equality, cooperation, and social development. In my opinion, mixed-ability education is better because it helps students improve not only academically but also socially.
