Most schools have been traditionally known for their heavy curriculum with a wide range of subjects which students have to study. In recent years, critics have opposed the idea that students should have their freedom to choose their favourite subject instead of having to learn it all. From my perspective, school should give the students a chance to choose the subjects they feel suitable for themselves because of their willingness and career orientation.
Firstly, being at the liberty to choose their favourite subject, students will feel more excited and enthusiastic about the lesson. Instead of being forced to study all natural subjects such as Maths, Physics, Biology and so on, students can freely study Geography, History. By studying their favourite subjects, this can also boost the students productivity and intelligence. Students will have more motivation to study and they won’t be forced into the class they don’t want. Additionally, for some art-loving students, they will have the chance to study about these subjects instead of having to spend most of their time in calculations or logical thinking. Thanks to this, students will have career orientations for their future and they can choose their suitable jobs.
While some opponents oppose that students should study natural subjects in order to sharpen their mind, in fact, subjects such as literature, music, art, and so on also help to cultivate the students’ intelligence. However, schools should also take into consideration that they need to make Math and Literature at 2 compulsory subjects so students can practice their critical thinking and communication skills through these two subjects.
In conclusion, while letting children choose the subjects for themselves brings many benefits, schools should also put some limitations like the compulsory subjects for all students. By doing so, school will create students with fully development.
