The perception that students have better performance when attending a single-sex school than a mixed school has become a widely debatable concern. While I accept this perspective is somewhat justifiable, I believe that studying in single-sex schools could have several undesirable influences on the children in the long run.
On the one hand, it is understandable why it is better for children to be in single-sex schools. Firstly, these schools help students to reach their full potential through their customized programs. It is obvious that boys and girls are different in nature and both have their own unique requirements. For example, girls are more likely to want to learn collaboratively and cooperatively, while boys tend to get something good from being competitive. Therefore, single sex education could cater those needs by providing tailored curriculum. Furthermore, this type of school may provide a more relaxed environment for students as they do not have to worry about impressing the other gender and get straitjacketed to some stereotypical gender role. As a result, they would focus better on their study, improve their weak points and develop their strengths.
On the other hand, there are a host of compelling reasons as to why I believe that attending single-sex schools might exert such detrimental impacts. First and foremost, enrolling in single-sex schools may lead to the lack of social skills for students in the future. In contrast to students in mixed schools, children attending single-sex ones do not have the chance to cooperate and understand the other gender’s perspectives on various issues. So, they may have trouble expressing their views in the presence of the opposite sex and working in groups. Additionally, single-sex schools may not provide their students with lessons about proper manners. Boys would not be educated to differentiate between rude and chivalrous manners, therefore behaving rudely and improperly around the opposite sex. And this could cause gender misconceptions and a more unbalanced society in the future.
To conclude, while it is irrefutable that students can benefit from going to single-sex schools since they can unleash their capacities and enjoy a more relaxed environment, I contend that this trend could negatively affect students’ social skills and a balanced society.
