Band 9: Some people think that competition at work, at school and in daily life is a good thing. Others believe that we should try to cooperate more, rather than competing against each other. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion. Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience

Many individuals advocate that competitiveness plays a pivotal role in various spheres of life, while others argue that fostering cooperation is a more prudent approach. This essay examines the merits of both perspectives before presenting my own viewpoint.

Proponents of competition assert that it significantly enhances motivation and morale in professional and academic environments. For instance, in educational institutions, some educators instil a competitive spirit among students by ranking classes based on academic performance. This competitive ranking cultivates a strong desire for achievement, as students strive to outperform their peers. Moreover, such intellectual rivalry can instigate a pursuit of self-improvement and bolster self-confidence, as individuals are encouraged to push their boundaries to achieve greater heights.

Conversely, the drawbacks of relentless competition have gained increasing recognition in today’s society, prompting a shift towards valuing collaboration. While competition can drive individuals to excel, it can also engender negative consequences such as peer pressure and unhealthy self-comparison. A significant number of employees find themselves in a perpetual race to match their colleagues, who may have attained higher salaries or accolades. This incessant comparison can generate undue stress and detract from overall job satisfaction. Evidence of this phenomenon can be observed in various workplaces, where the workplace environment becomes toxic due to the pressure to consistently outperform others. In contrast, cooperative efforts can lead to a more supportive atmosphere. For example, shopping malls that feature a diverse range of businesses, such as restaurants, retail stores, and entertainment venues, can attract a broader audience and ultimately enhance collective profitability.

In conclusion, both competition and cooperation possess unique advantages that can be harnessed for personal and communal development. However, it is crucial to strike a balance between the two ideologies. Embracing a collaborative spirit while maintaining a healthy level of competition may lead to more sustainable success and well-being in both personal and professional contexts.
