According to several viewpoints, it is advisable for the government to raise petrol prices specifically for cars and other means of transportations to attack environmental issues. While I consider that this might be an effective measure, I argue that the other measures might even have greater influences.
On the one hand, the sharp rise in the cost of fuel is believed to bring positive effects on the environment. To begin with, implementing this strategy the authority could limit the use of citizen’s private vehicles. This might contribute to the fact that individuals have to travel by using public transportations if they want to save their money, as these types of vehicles are cheaper and affordable. As a result, the decline in the emissions of carbon dioxide would enhance the air quality, improving the well-being of citizens. Additionally, the rise in the petrol prices could generate the funds for many eco-friendly projects. For instance, governmental financial assistance plays a significant role in helping environmental activities to run their plans. Ultimately, raising the price of fuel might provide a great deal of advantages towards the environment.
On the other hand, I believe that there are numerous alternative strategies to deal with environmental problems. Firstly, in some countries, the government has a tendency toward ignoring the condition of the public transport system. In order to attract a large number of residents to utilize this type of transport, these countries should upgrade and expand the public transport provision. This would result in the use of private cars which is the main reason for the degradation of the environment. Secondly, introducing congestion charges could reduce the number of vehicles moving to the city. As a result, there would be less transportations appearing in the city, enhancing the condition of the environment.
To recapitulate, while the effectiveness of the increase in the cost of petrol is reliable, I still hold a belief that the government ought to concentrate on other alternative measures which could solve the environmental issues.
