There is an ongoing and controversial debate over whether governments ought to spend public money to road and motorways or the public transport systems. Some people claim that government should invest money in roads and motorways, while other disagree with this idea, pointing out that authorities should solely focus on the public transport systems like trams and railways. Personally, even though these two factors can offer different benefits, I reckon that there should be a balanced approach since both factors can bring positive consequences in the long run.
It must be noted that many universities are located in urban areas. In fact, many students from rural areas struggle to commute as it takes a lot of time to reach their destination and drains their energies. Granted, that is mainly because of the quality of roads, meaning they are not well-constructed. If the government invests money in the improvement of these roads, students will easily commute from their houses to their universities. Additionally, if the quality of roads is poor, it might put a financial strain on individuals. In other words, there is a possibility of damaging cars and motorbikes when driving, and it requires a lot of money to repair them. Authorities therefore ought to allocate public money to the development of roads and motorways.
On the other hand, funding the public transport systems, such as trams and railways, can bring about a positive change in the long-term. Admittedly, in many developing countries, the public transport systems are uncomfortable and not punctual. To encourage people to use public transport, authorities ought to make them comfortable and well-equipped, while the problem of punctuality can be solved by implementing stricter timetables. If people start to use public transport rather than their private cars, it can absolutely enhance the quality of the environment, thereby reducing air and noise pollution. Hence, governments should fund the public transport systems.
To conclude, I undoubtedly believe that striking a balance is the best solution because funding both can be advantageous.
