Band 7+: Some people think that homework is an essential part of children's education, while others believe it puts unnecessary pressure on them. Do you agree or disagree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Some people argue that homework is essential for children, while others contend that it causes too much stress. This essay will discuss both sides of this debate and pursue the opinion that homework is ultimately necessary for children, despite the fact that it could induce stress.

On the one hand, opponents of homework absence suggest children feel tremendous amount of stress due to the fact that they worry about getting a bad grade. Moreover, a big deal of homework can reduce free time for hobbies, rest and family, which are important for physical and mental health. Some students also do not have a quiet place at home or someone to turn to for help, so homework makes them feel anxious. In addition, too much homework may lead to sleep decrease and poor mental sharpness, that might also result in parents’ feeling upset because of being incapable of helping their children with school tasks.

On the other hand, supporters of homework consider it to be useful for enhancing what was learnt in class. Regular practice helps students remember facts and skills better. Besides, homework also teaches responsibility and time management. For many teachers, homework is a way to check if pupils understand lessons and prepare them for more serious exams. Furthermore, homework can lead to faster learning because students must find solutions by themselves or use resources like books and the internet. In my opinion, homework is necessary but should be limited and useful. Schools must take into consideration children’s age and individuals’ needs – teachers should set tasks that match students’ age and needs rather than school curriculum (syllabus). Providing feedback and extra help as well as keeping a balance between study and free time will lower stress and help students do well and stay healthy.

To conclude, while homework can cause stress when excessively or poorly planned, it has clear educational benefits. Therefore, homework should not be abolished but improved so that it supports learning without harming children’s health.
