Some people claim that individuals in today’s contemporary society are increasingly dependent on one another, while others argue that people are now more independent than ever. Although mutual dependence remains important in certain aspects of life, I believe that individuals today are generally more independent due to technological advancements and the development of various services.
On the one hand, one major reason is the increasing specialisation of work. To illustrate, since each person possesses their own strengths and weaknesses, people increasingly rely on others to meet their personal and professional needs. Furthermore, modern economies are highly specialised, which forces workers to focus on particular jobs and increases interdependence. For example, online shops depend on transport companies for delivery, office workers may depend on farmers for food, and patients rely on doctors for healthcare. As a result, no individual can survive without the assistance and support of others. In addition, individuals continue to require emotional support from others. Specifically, despite technological progress or financial prosperity, stress and personal challenges cannot always be overcome independently. For instance, parents and friends can support young individuals when they face academic pressure, unemployment, or financial issues. Therefore, people depend on relationships that help them cope with adversity.
On the other hand, I am more convinced that people are becoming more independent. A significant factor to consider is that technological development enables people to improve their self-directed learning and problem-solving capabilities. To clarify this point, digital transformation has completely changed the way human civilisation operates. To demonstrate, the growth of artificial intelligence, internet-based platforms, and search engines enables individuals to learn at their own pace. Besides, students can access previous lessons through online apps instead of relying entirely on teachers. Thus, individuals gain greater autonomy over their personal and professional tasks while enhancing their problem-solving capabilities. Moreover, the development of digital services creates favourable opportunities for people to reduce their reliance on others. To explain, instead of depending on others to meet individual needs related to banking, healthcare, and shopping, people can use digital devices and services for mobile banking, online medical consultations, e-commerce, and self-checkout machines. As a consequence, everyday life becomes more convenient, and individuals have greater control over their schedules, daily activities, and personal choices.
In conclusion, although modern individuals continue to depend on others for cooperation and emotional support, I believe that people are becoming more independent overall. This is because technological advancements and the development of digital services enable individuals to manage their lives with greater autonomy.
