There is ongoing debate about whether people in modern society are more likely to depend on each other or they are becoming more independent. This essay will discuss both perspectives before elaborating the reasons why I lean towards the latter.
On the one hand, it is argued that many individuals tend to rely on expertise from others because knowledge and competency requirements of each field have become broader and more complex. This leads to fewer people being able to excel in several areas at the same time; therefore, they often need aid from others in work or even in personal life. Additionally, globalisation has fostered collaboration and reliance on others. Nowadays, there is an increasing number of multinational companies operating across borders, requiring employees from different regions to collaborate frequently. For instance, a software development team at Viettel in Vietnam, often includes American programmers and Vietnamese designers, so that their cooperation can optimize the outcomes and the quality of their products. This interdependence in the workplace means that individuals may not fulfil their roles without relying on other’s contributions.
On the other hand, the trend of being more independent can be attributed to the priority of self-reliance among young generations. As many young people place a great emphasis on privacy and freedom, they try to make their own property and build their personal lives to reduce reliance on their parents. Furthermore, some people believe that the advancement of technology has enhanced independence in both personal and professional contexts. This is because the development of digital platforms and the internet allows individuals to access several online services, materials and tools, which helps them to solve their problems and complete their tasks themselves as well as reduce assistance from other people. For example, people can study without tutors with reliable and high-quality education through virtual courses published by some universities or organizations on the internet. Employees can apply AI tools in their work in order to handle several tasks in a shorter time and increase their productivity independently.
In conclusion, both sides have merits. While the more complicated knowledge in each sector and globalized workforce can contribute to increased reliance, I still believe that the development of advanced technology and the priority of self-independence have made people reduce aid from others.
