Some people believe that traditional libraries are a waste of public money and resources and should be replaced by computers, while others argue that libraries still provide important benefits. Although conventional libraries offer a valuable environment for study, I believe that greater investment should be directed towards digital resources because they are more accessible and efficient.
On the one hand, traditional libraries provide a quiet and organised environment where people can concentrate on studying or reading. This can be particularly beneficial for students who live in crowded households or do not have suitable places to work at home. Libraries also provide books, computers and other educational materials to people who may not be able to afford these resources themselves. For example, a student from a low-income family can use a library to access textbooks and complete schoolwork without purchasing expensive materials. This is why supporters of this view believe that conventional libraries still play an important educational role in society.
On the other hand, I believe that computers and digital resources can provide information in a much more convenient and efficient way. Physical libraries require large buildings, storage space, maintenance and many individual copies of books, whereas digital materials can be stored electronically and accessed by large numbers of people from different locations. Students can also search for information quickly and use online books or academic documents without travelling to a library. For instance, a digital textbook can be accessed immediately from home instead of requiring students to wait until a physical copy becomes available. Therefore, while some public study spaces should remain, I believe most investment should gradually shift towards digital libraries and online resources.
In conclusion, although traditional libraries remain useful as quiet study spaces and provide resources for disadvantaged people, I believe computers should play a much greater role because digital information can be accessed more easily, quickly and by a wider population.
