There is a compelling debate about whether Olympics should be invested in or if it is just wasting money. This essay argues that Olympic games are worth being spent more money on, as they strengthen bonds between nations and bring back physical benefits for attendees, rather than polluting the environment.
It is vital to understand that Olympics bring together participants from many countries and get them to know each other. In other words, Olympic games break down the language barriers between different nations, which potentially lays the groundwork for cooperative relationships in the future. Additionally, people from all over the world can learn about new cultures and traditions from different parts of the world, which helps them break stereotypes – a primary foundation for a permanent partnership. For example, after the Olympic Games organized in Japan, they were able to attract more support from other governments through the positive national images that they built.
There are, however, some individuals who think that Olympics is just a waste of money as they have contaminated many areas after the games finished. This belief is rooted in the fact that it needs to build more infrastructure and consume more energy when such a big event like this occurs. Therefore, it results in a huge amount of litter being released by the spectators and high rates of air and noise pollution. Taking Beijing as an example, about six million visitors traveled to this city during the Olympic games, which left huge amounts of rubbish and led to traffic congestion, a main factor of air pollution. Nevertheless, the authorities of the urban areas, where Olympics took place, have tried to minimise these negative effects as well as use their financial resources efficiently.
It is observed that Olympics also help athletes stay physically and mentally healthy. Since they have to train intensively for years, their bodies become stronger, more flexible and resistant to diseases. Apart from this, they have to follow strict diets and schedules, which also helps them maintain a healthy lifestyle. Moreover, watching Olympic games can also inspire viewers and non-professional athletes to exercise more and adopt a healthier lifestyle. For instance, after the London Olympics, many surveys showed that more than 1 million British people started to exercise more regularly, especially running, cycling and swimming. The British government also called this effect “Olympic Legacy” – the spiritual legacy that the Olympics left for the community.
In conclusion, despite the possibility of pollution, Olympic Games bring a lot of benefits, particularly in collaborative relationships and a positive lifestyle. Therefore, they should be enthusiastically welcomed and invested in more in order to avoid environmental issues.
