Many people argue that schools should play a key role in teaching children how to manage money, whereas others believe that this responsibility lies mainly with parents. This essay will discuss both viewpoints before explaining why I believe that schools and parents should share this responsibility, with schools playing a more structured role.
On the one hand, some people think that parents are the most suitable teachers of financial management. This is because parents understand their children’s daily habits, spending behaviour and personal needs better than schools do. For example, parents can teach children practical skills such as saving pocket money, budgeting for small purchases and understanding the value of hard-earned income. Moreover, financial habits often develop through observation, and children who see their parents managing money wisely are more likely to adopt similar behaviours. Therefore, many believe that parents are naturally best placed to teach these essential life skills.
On the other hand, others argue that schools should take responsibility for teaching money management, and I strongly agree with this view. Schools can provide structured and consistent financial education that many parents may be unable to offer due to lack of knowledge or time. For instance, lessons on budgeting, saving, taxes and basic investment can be included in the curriculum, ensuring that all students receive equal financial knowledge regardless of family background. In today’s increasingly complex financial world, relying solely on parents may result in significant gaps in understanding. Therefore, schools play a crucial role in preparing children for real-life financial challenges, while parents can reinforce these lessons at home.
In conclusion, although parents can effectively teach children basic money habits through daily life experiences, schools are better equipped to provide systematic and comprehensive financial education. In my opinion, a combination of school-based instruction supported by parental guidance is the most effective way to ensure that children develop strong money management skills.
