There is a debate over which what crucial role sports play in the development of a society, with some saying sports play an important role in today’s community, with other arguing it is a pastime activity. In my opinion, sports still play the effective role these days.
Distraction from real issues can be one reason why some people think it is a leisure activity. When society’s focus shifts to major sporting events like the World Cup or the Olympics, important social issues such as poverty, education, or environmental concerns often receive less attention. The widespread excitement and media coverage of these events can overshadow critical problems that require immediate action. Additionally, people and organizations may spend significant amounts of money on event tickets, promotional campaigns, and sports-related merchandise. This financial investment in sports can seem excessive, especially when those resources could be redirected to address urgent societal needs like improving schools, reducing homelessness, or combating climate change. An example of this can be seen during the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil. The government spent billions of dollars on building new stadiums and infrastructure to host the event, while millions of citizens were living in poverty without access to adequate healthcare, education, or housing.
On the other hand, one of the primary arguments for sports playing an essential role in the development of society is their contribution to physical and mental health. Sports encourage people to stay active, which contributes to better physical health. For example, before the COVID-19 people were more active compared to nowadays,as earlier than people generally had more freedom to engage in social activities, travel, and visit public spaces without major health concerns. Mental health issues were present but did not have the same widespread impact that the pandemic later caused.
However, participation in sports teaches valuable life skills such as discipline, teamwork, leadership, and resilience. For example, young athletes who play on a team must learn to work together, set goals, and manage competition, all of which can help them in their personal and professional lives.
In conclusion, while some people say sports are waste of the time, other argue it is a best development for today’s society and I side with those who argue that, sports are important in nowadays community.
