While it is true that pupils learn history at school as a main subject, it is difficult to determine whether learning history is a waste of time or it is a necessity. It seems to me that although history is such a complex major, it is vital to know the background of your own nation and what they went through.
Studying history is advantageous for several reasons. Firstly, by learning, people will be able to understand the past of their ancestors and realize how much effort was put into the life that people are living in today. As a result, the vast majority of people might appreciate and value more, the peace and happiness that were achieved through struggle, blood and sacrifice. Secondly, a person who knows history is more likely to learn from past mistakes and understand better their origins. So, that person may expand an awareness of own traditions, language and national heritage. This can strengthen a sense of identity.
On the other hand, some people argue that history is useless and just an inefficient use of one’s time. First and foremost, there are subjects that people should prioritise such as science, technology or law, which may be more practical in everyday life. In addition, historical information can be different based on a historian or a country. Consequently, it can cause to misleading and confusion for people to find accuracy. Most importantly, too much focus on the past might distract from the future. Excessive studying about historical events, can contribute to the loss in the present, and not worrying about the future.
In conclusion, it is true to say that both learning history or considering it as a pointless activity each has undeniable purposes. Nevertheless, from my point of view, learning history to some extent is respectful towards to your ancestors and fulfilling your knowledge about the past of humanity.
