Band 8+: Some people think that technology has made communication between people less personal. To what extent do you agree or disagree

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

It is considered by some individuals that technology has transformed the way people communicate with each other, making it less personal. I tend to agree with this view, as the widespread use of messaging apps and the shift to virtual interactions have led to a decrease in face-to-face communication, resulting in less personal and meaningful conversations.

Nowadays, people often rely on technology to communicate, opting for messages instead of personal meetings, which has led to a decline in genuine connections. In the past, people would write letters or meet in person to have conversations, fostering more meaningful and personal interactions. Today, many prefer using mobile devices due to their convenience and speed. For example, in urgent situations, individuals can quickly send a message. However, it is undeniable that face-to-face conversations are essential for making dialogue more personal and emotionally rich.

[While technology offers convenience, it often sacrifices the emotional depth that comes with traditional communication. Text messages and online chats lack important non-verbal cues such as tone of voice, facial expressions, and body language—all of which play a vital role in conveying feelings and building trust. As a result, misunderstandings are more likely to occur, and relationships may become more superficial over time. Moreover, constant notifications and multitasking during online conversations can make people feel less valued, as attention is divided. In contrast, face-to-face communication demands presence and engagement, which helps people feel heard and emotionally connected. Therefore, although digital tools are efficient, they cannot fully replace the personal touch that in-person communication provides.

In addition, communication on platforms such as social media and email is often brief and lacks emotional depth. Messages are typically short, and interactions are limited to likes, emojis, or short comments, which do not allow for meaningful conversations. While these platforms are useful for staying in touch, they rarely support deep and thoughtful exchanges. As a result, people may feel emotionally disconnected despite being constantly in contact. Furthermore, when individuals communicate behind a screen, they often feel less accountable and less emotionally involved, which can lead to misunderstandings, cold responses, or even ignoring messages altogether. Over time, this can create distance in relationships and make communication feel impersonal and superficial.

In conclusion, while technology has made communication faster and more convenient, it has also reduced the emotional depth and personal connection between individuals. The shift from face-to-face conversations to digital interactions often results in brief, impersonal exchanges that lack meaningful engagement. Therefore, I believe that technology has indeed made communication less personal, and this trend may continue unless people make conscious efforts to preserve genuine human connection.
