Some individuals believe that the most effective way to reduce crime is to give longer prison sentences. Others think that the rehabilitation programs, education, and community service methods are better. However, I believe that education, rehabilitation, and community service are more effective in reducing crime than longer prison sentences.
On the one hand, one issue with long prison sentences is overcrowding.Nevertheless, harsh penalties can deter a crime. The fear of a significant punishment can prevent recurrence of the offense. Moreover, people are fully aware that they could lose 5 or more years in prison. As a result, they do not commit murders or money theft. For instance, in countries with strict sentencing laws, crime rates tend to be lower.
On the other hand, harsh punishment does not solve the main problem: why people commit violent or theft. However, rehabilitation programs and other programs do. Criminals tend to have problems with money or mental health issues due to lack of knowledge. For example, If lawbreaker undergoes a rehabilitation course or learns some profession, while they are in prison. After leaving prison, they will be in a more stable position, because they will have education and basic knowledge to find work. It will also be a big advantage to the country, thieves who find work will increase the country’s economy.
In conclusion, thieves should be released only after completing rehabilitation programs and training in basic job skills. I believe that only if criminals are educated properly will they not reoffend.
