A number of people believe that the best way to reduce crime is to give longer prison sentences while others contend that there are better alternative ways of reducing crime. While both views are valid, I lean towards the latter.
There are convincing reasons why some opine that giving longer prison sentences is the best way to decrease crime. Firstly, longer prison terms are viewed as a powerful deterrent because they can feel the lack of freedom and relaxation in prison that discourages individuals from partaking in illegal activities. For instance, in Russia prisoners can be held in isolated prisons in Siberia, where conditions are extremely tough. This can result in declining crime rates. Furthermore, spending decades behind bars means isolated from society, so prisoners may regret their criminal behaviors. A case in point is Albert Wood spent his entire life in prison after murdering someone at 18 years old. By giving them long prison terms, the government can remove dangerous criminals and ensure safety for residents.
However, I would believe that there are better alternative ways of decreasing crime.One of the most effective solutions is improving education and work opportunities. As you know, the rise of crime is due to low awareness and unstable income. By providing vocational training courses, the government can support ex-prisoners engage in productive activities, so that they can have a second chance to rebuild their life and gain stable income. Moreover, reintegrating prisoners can feel the love and care from others. As a result they are less likely to reoffend.
In conclusion, although both views are valid to some extent I still opine that there are better alternative ways of reducing crime.
