Reduction in crime is often attributed to harsher punishments such as longer prison sentences and heavy fines, while it is also argued that education and rehablitaion are more effective methods.I firmly believe that early education and rehablitation would play a crucial role in reducing crime rate and giving another chance to humanity.
To begin with, most number of crimes in the world are committed by repeated felons which means having a prison sentence is ineffective in reducing the crime rate.Historically, reports have show that having an eduction program at rehablitaion facility for criminal has produced fruitful results. For instance, in Norway the crime rate dropped significantly because of prison reforms and proper eduction programs at prison. So, rehablitaion and education is effective in reducing crime rate.
One the other hand, some countries view this completely differently and believe in harsher punishments. For example, in gulf countries, harsh and barbaric punishments such as death sentences and cutting one’s hand for theft are viewed as viable options for crime reduction. The reduction in crime rates in those countries can not be associated with harsher punisments alone but most of that can be attributed to better surveillance.
In conclusion , I believe that on the surface, it might look like harsher punishments result in lesser crime rates but in contrast, countries like Norway have proven it otherwise by incorporating better education at prisons.
