In recent years, there has been an increase in the number of people suffering from obesity due to the rapid growth of fast-food chain restaurants. Some argue that this problem should be addressed by the governments, while others believe that individuals are responsible for their own health conditions. This essay will discuss both perspectives before presenting my own view.
Obesity could be caused by a variety of factors, one of which is unhealthy eating habits. Some people prefer to grab their lunch at fast-food restaurants, as they sell food and beverages at reasonably lower prices compared to cafés or bistros. Unfortunately, consuming junk foods regularly will lead people to become obese. Burgers from Burger King, for instance, are made with processed meats, which contain mostly trans fat, high levels of sodium, and low amounts of essential nutrients and fiber. Moreover, the majority of people order French fries as their sides, which are high in carbohydrates. These components contribute to high levels of calorie intake into the body, leading to the storage of excess fat. Looking at this condition, it is necessary for governments to set up appropriate regulations, for example, banning some fast-food restaurants from serving obese people, to overcome the obesity problem and raise citizens’ awareness to start eating mindfully, so that the number of cases could be lowered.
However, without the efforts of each individual, it is probably difficult to tackle the growing problem of obesity, as they should have the motivation to start living more healthily. With a goal in mind, obese people will be more likely to take initiatives, by choosing to eat whole foods, starting to do regular physical activities, and consuming vitamins and minerals daily.
In conclusion, I believe that it requires both governments’ support and individuals’ efforts to work together in addressing the problem of obesity. While policies made by governments may help in suppressing the growth of obesity, each individual should also act to start changing their lifestyles to healthy ones.
