It is often debated whether universities should offer students the knowledge and skills that they need for their careers, or the important function of universities is to give access to knowledge for its own sake or regardless of whether the lesson is useful to a worker. I personally believe that the essential function of the universities is providing their graduates with both knowledge and skills.
To begin with, offering both skills and knowledge to students in universities brings many advantages for graduates in their future careers. The first merit is that it could help students to find a job much easier. This is because many employers nowadays prefer to hire a worker who does not have better comprehension only, but also some skills like problem solving. To illustrate, clever staff might do their job in right order and could produce the exact products that the owners want; however, the creative and smart workers do not only create a good product, but they could make a new invention that can increase the profits. As a result, the employers may hire students who have both knowledge and skills as their workers.
Another benefit is that it could help the graduates reach professional careers much faster. For example, the graduates who have best knowledge and skills could adapt to many works easily, and at the same time, they might have a better performance rather than other workers due to their problem solving skills. Therefore, the business owners might increase their wages and position.
To sum up, I strongly believe that the main function of a college is to provide its students with the knowledge and skills that are needed in the workplace. Both knowledge and skills could help those graduates get a job and professional career much easier.
