Band 9: Some people think that young people should follow the traditions of their society and others think young people should be free to behave as individuals. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

The current state of society is characterized by a persistent fight between proponents of conservatism and individualism. Conservatives promote adherence to established customs among young people, whereas the opposite faction advocates for individual autonomy from societal norms. I concur with the significance of following individual interests and ideals. However, I also maintain that certain elements of a conventional society may be beneficial for the younger generation.

On the one hand, individualism perfectly embodies the ideals and demands of modern society. Conventional notions of inequity, intense parental and peer influence, and the lack of autonomy in decision-making were all well acknowledged societal constructs that were not considered harmful. Indeed, these limitations have hindered many individuals from fully experiencing life and have impeded our societal progress. Fortunately, these obstacles have progressively disintegrated over the last decades, allowing new generations to actively engage in social activities. They have the ability to make choices that will have a transformative impact on their own lives and the lives of those in their vicinity, thereby stimulating our planet’s progress.

On the other hand, I contend that individualism’s many advantages do not imply that conventional principles have become universally obsolete. Frequently, traditions include fundamental values such as respect for others and safeguarding family members, which are relevant today. I advocate for the preservation of traditional values while embracing their adaptation to the dynamic features of contemporary society. My longstanding concern is that, in their pursuit of uniqueness, a significant number of young individuals may start to neglect all the principles and norms of a conventional society. Regrettably, this apprehension is gradually manifesting as I see an increasing number of young individuals, namely the advocates of the so-called ‘woke’ movement, who impose contradictory, misguided, and harmful principles upon others. They completely disregard the primary ideological goal of individualism, which protects common people’s thoughts and actions from societal influences, as they maintain that customs no longer hold significance in our lives.

In conclusion, both conservatism and uniqueness have associated drawbacks. We should strive to strike a balance between the two ideologies to ensure a better quality of life for both current and future generations while also preventing the emergence of more harmful societal beliefs.
