Band 8+: Some people think that zoos are cruel and should be closed down. Others, however, believe that zoos can be useful in protecting wild animals. Discuss both opinions and give your own opinion.

The debate surrounding whether zoos should be banned or not has become highly polarized among people. Proponents suggest that zoos ought to be closed for reasons such as animal extinction in artificial environment and the waste of public funds, whereas opponents argue that sentient beings can be kept in such places for entertainment and financial benefits for the government. Personally, I believe that preserving animals depends on their type.

On the one hand, there are several reasons why some people argue that all zoos should be closed. The most significant one is the possible disappearance of certain species. Take lions as an example. Being adapted to the natural safari environment, these animals find it difficult to survive behind bars. This, in turn, may slow down their reproduction, since lions are predators and their bodies need a natural habitat to function properly. As a result, this change may lead to the extinction of such species, causing a loss of biological diversity for humanity. Inefficient investment is another argument against this practice. In a world where every penny counts, not to mention sectors that suffer from insufficient funding, governments should reduce the amount of money spent on zoos.

Conversely, it is undeniable that zoos may also offer several advantages, the most prominent of which is entertainment. Many people enjoy observing, feeding, or taking pictures of animals, which is considered a popular way of spending holidays. Furthermore, zoos provide an excellent opportunity to learn more about animals’ lives and habitats. Individuals, especially children, may be taught the safety measures that should be followed in the presence of wild creatures as well as protecting them. Economic benefits that a country may gain from entrance fees and food sales within zoos are another positive aspect that keeps people interested in such facilities.

In conclusion, while keeping animals behind bars may pose potential threats such as the extinction of rare species and inefficient use of funds, the fact that zoos entertain many people and generate significant revenue for organizations is often considered more important. In my opinion, specialists should carefully evaluate animals before removing them from the wild in order to prevent further negative consequences.
