The debate about whether people should strive for communication with possible sentient aliens is ongoing. Neglecting potential scientific development merits consideration. Some, including myself, believe that it is perspective both for technological innovation and groundbreaking discoveries as establishing extraterrestrial contact serves as the cornerstone of unravelling mysteries that have long intrigued humanity. Conversely, with the presenting risks of misunderstanding and threats to global security, critics consider this integration destructive for mankind, prioritizing mental and physical safety.
On the one hand, opponents contend that creating contact channels with exoplanetary intellects carries undeniable hazards, despite the potential for cultural exchange. After thoroughly weighing the pros and cons, they concluded that such integration is not worthwhile due to a lack of information about aliens’ methods of communication and intentions. Moreover, the uncertainty of our ability to convey and understand messages, leading to doubts about the allocation of significant resources to such projects. For example, if the weak radio signals detected from the middle of the Milky Way had not lacked clear meaning to us, the possibility of these signs posing a threat would not have been nonzero. No matter how far the technological and scientific breakthroughs may have already gone, the fear of unforeseeable risks persistently remains in the human psyche. From a holistic perspective, specific sectors involved in the search for extraterrestrials in the USSR refrained from actively attempting communication, focusing instead on observing, uncertain about the use of radio signals as weapons.
On the other hand, some, including myself, advocate for exchanging information with otherworldly species, believing it could drive advancements and unveil scientific revelations. By embracing secure methodologies, humanity may obtain a wealth of information vital for solving persistent global puzzles. With a better understanding of life, enhancing our life is possible as well as propelling technologically advanced. In my observation, the discovery of bioelectricity by Luigi Galvani, now pivotal in diagnosing numerous diseases, illustrates how scientific research can lead to life-saving innovations. Additionally, such findings could further our understanding of the universe and our position within it. In aggregate, this promotes collaboration and inspires people, as demonstrated by how James Watson’s and Francis Crick’s elucidation of DNA structure fostered further research in molecular biology.
Overall, I would like to emphasize that the endeavours of contact beyond the Earth offers invaluable insights into a deeper comprehension of the world. Despite the potentially profound discoveries, ignoring the risks is merely unacceptable.
