Many studies have revealed that the educational levels of most criminals are low, so many people think that educating prisoners is the best way to reduce crime, and that criminals can also get jobs after release. Personally, I partly agree with this view.
On the one hand, there are two main reasons why the government should educate criminals. First, the government should deploy educational programs for offenders to let them know how serious and dangerous their crimes are and to help them make amends to their victims. Moreover, educational classes should be held to help prisoners develop fundamental skills to help them reintegrate into society after release. Second, education encourages awareness and development within the subconscious of criminals. Criminals may have a chance to understand the value of life, and they may experience a change in the way they live their lives and contribute value to society.
On the other hand, education is important, but the government should use more than one way to decrease the crime rate. There are at least two other ways to help the government. First, the government should deploy programs to encourage businesses to recruit well-rehabilitated offenders. Many companies have a large fear of prisoners and tend to eliminate their CVs; the government should list well-rehabilitated offenders and publicize the list so that businesses will have a sense of security and agree to recruit them. Second, early education is one of the best ways to decrease the crime rate. Children with a high level of education have a lower percentage chance of becoming criminals than those with a low level of education. The government should consider schools an important aspect that needs huge investments in education.
In conclusion, the idea that education is the best way to reduce crime may be true, but education will be less effective without other methods to control the crime rate.
