In recent years, it has become increasingly commonplace for many individuals to disclose user information online for numerous reasons like publicizing or online banking. While there are multiple positives of this, I am of the opinion that the benefits of putting personal information online are eclipsed by its negative sides.
In today’s contemporary world, sharing personal information online can bring noticeable advantages. Firstly, when individuals upload their phone numbers or educational backgrounds on job websites, it enables companies to reach potential employees more quickly and efficiently. This not only simplifies the recruitment process but also helps job seekers secure employment without unnecessary difficulties. Secondly, providing personal data online allows citizens to access various government services and use online banking platforms with greater ease. For example, people can pay taxes, transfer money, or receive social benefits without visiting physical offices. Consequently, the digital use of personal information has made daily life more convenient and time-saving for many individuals.
Nonetheless, the risks associated with sharing personal data online are substantial and multifaceted. First, hackers can harvest sensitive information without the owner’s knowledge and use addresses to locate people’s homes, which in some cases facilitates burglaries or stalking. Second, once criminals obtain phone numbers and other personal details, they may directly contact victims and attempt to extort money or commit fraud by impersonating banks or officials. Third, personal data can quickly spread beyond one’s control – leaked information may be circulated worldwide, making it impossible to fully remove from the internet and exposing individuals to long-term harm. Because of these crucial drawbacks, I take issue with the idea that the convenience of posting personal information is outweighed.
To sum up, although sharing personal information online can make some activities easier, I believe that individuals should be more careful and limit the amount of personal data they share online.
