Having a global language can have its advantages and disadvantages. For many years English has spread across the globe as a universal language and seems to continue to do so. However, as English being relatively easy language to learn compared to other languages and as we already have many countries speaking and operating in this language, it will maintain its status as a predominant language.
Today, many countries teach English as their first or second language, and other institutions in other countries providing courses to teach the language. And as English is considered to be a relatively easier language to learn as compared to other languages, for example, Russian or Chinese, people taught the language can sooner start using the language to communicate with other English speaking individuals or employ in their working activity. In addition, English has been employed as a standard language in educational institutions for many years, and as a result so many works, books, and other materials has been written in this language. And so people who know the language have access to a wider range of learning materials.
Nevertheless, as new generations start using English as their first language, some languages are under a threat of extinction. New generations of some nations living in English speaking countries may opt for English as their main language rather than the mother tongue of their parents and ancestors.
In conclusion, although some languages might be a target of extinctions as newer generations prefer to speak English rather than their mother tongue, having English as a global language comes with many benefits, as already being employed as a standard language, having many written works in this language and being easier to learn.
