English, one of the most prevalent languages in the world, has marked and underscored its importance in contemporary society through numerous epoch-making events and circumstances. However, it also holds certain demerits that are discussed in several journal articles done by certain communities. From my perspective, although drawbacks may arise relating to the widespread application of English across the globe, they are eclipsed by a multitude of benefits offered by using this common language.
On one hand, disadvantages concerning the dominance of English are the manipulation of soft power and the discouragement of diversity. Particularly, through the medium of English usage, certain cultures of English-speaking countries have unfair advantages in promoting their cultural values in terms of a worldwide scale. This is immensely reflected in the predominant position of American and Western cultures, outclassing other cultural powerhouses, namely Japan and Korea. Another downside of this phenomenon is the refusal to embrace the societal contribution of minorities, especially in countries where English is their first language. For instance, the youth may have an increasing tendency to be willing to learn another language besides the English language, bearing the perception that focusing solely on English is enough to help them thrive in their future trajectories. Consequently, some unpopular cultures and languages are at risk of dying out, which adversely impacts the diversity and inclusion constantly encouraged during current globalisation.
On the other hand, the vital role of English is signified thanks to its gradual integration in a blend of facets and channels. Specifically, with regard to the academic landscape, most research documents and students’ essays are written in English, not only to reach a wider spectrum of readers but also to assert their credibility in the scientific community. As a result, a burgeoning demand for mastering English has emerged in different countries and regions, particularly those that consider it as a foreign language since fluency in English enables one individual to access a larger pool of opportunities in studying abroad, commonly believed to have higher educational standards. Moreover, not only in the written format but also in daily verbal conversations, English is widely regarded as a pivotal bridge that connects two people with no mutual means of communication. In this way, it is referred to as the lingua franca, which can be used and accepted by most citizens in the world to integrate with international environments. Reflecting on these points, English is an irrefutable tool for working and learning, which largely outweighs its negative effects in my opinion.
In conclusion, the spread of English is an indisputable movement in current globalising civilisations. However, it is paramount that each individual be aware of both its pros and cons to harness their abilities in this language and maintain an open mindset for diverse cultural perspectives.
