It is strongly believed that the ubiquity of English as a global language is beneficial compared to its drawbacks. While I accept that it will have some disadvantages, I am more convinced its advantages are dominant.
On the one hand, there are some reasons why people think the disadvantages of the spread of English in the world have to be considered. Firstly, some countries would lose their cultural diversity when citizens utilize English as an official language. To be more specific, because of the popularity of English, the mother tongue and the other minor languages are gradually fading and no longer utilized as extensively as before. Consequently, their own language could be on the verge of dying out and not be passed down to the next generations. In addition, English also presents challenges for both non-native speakers and those who encounter difficulties in acquiring a new language. For example, in terms of nations using figurative language as China and Korea, residents are familiar with their native language and find difficulties in Latin language. Furthermore, in certain challenging fields including science and technology, learning in English poses significant difficulties for non-native individuals.
On the other hand, I firmly believe that the prospects of English as a global language outweigh its consequences. The primary reason is that English would connect people from different cultures. Specifically, when language barriers are broken down, people gain a deeper understanding about other cultures, facilitating the sharing of cultural experiences regardless of geographical distances. Thus, increasing cross-cultural interaction and strengthening cultural bonds between communities. Lastly, the spread of English promotes international trade all over the world. A global language could decrease the communication barriers and conflicts in business and cooperation. Moreover, the international exchange of commerce among nations further fosters the economic development of participating countries.
In conclusion, despite some disadvantages, I support the spreading of English as a global language because of numerous advantages.
