It is said that the benefits of making English as an international language will persistently outweigh its drawbacks. From my perspective, although there are still some demerits caused by the expansion of English, I still believe that the merits will overshadow its disadvantages.
On the one hand, problems caused by the global spread of English are inevitable. Firstly, it is going to make the minority language systems became less popular and even vanished. In this case, people will miss out on some indispensable local customs and religious values belong to each country that are mainly expressed by the indigenous and official language. Furthermore, with the expansion of English throughout the globe, it will arise inequality between the English-speaking countries, such as the US and the UK, and the non-English-speaking countries. Meaning that the former will have the privileges that the latter does not, thus hindering the third-world countries from engaging in global market, businesses,….
One the other hand, notwithstanding these problems, I still agree that the advantages of globally spreading English will outweigh its drawbacks. To begin with, through English, we can link up everybody from all over the world. This makes us closer to each other, obliterating the difference in cultural norms, practices, believes, and values. In addition, English can also provide us opportunity that will promote us to a higher level of studying or working in a bid to make our way less harder to pursue our passions and ambitions. For instance, students with proficient skills in English reading and listening will have a chance to attend courses from prestigious universities worldwide. To sum up, English as an lingua franca will definitely have lots of educational implications.
In conclusion, while there are some demerits caused by spreading English as an international language, i still agree that the benefits will offset, or even overshadow its disadvantages.The advantages of the spread of English as a global language will continue to outweigh its disadvantages.
