It is said that the benefits of making English an international language will consistently outweigh its drawbacks. From my perspective, although there are some disadvantages associated with the expansion of English, I believe that the advantages will overshadow these downsides.
On the one hand, the challenges posed by the global spread of English are unavoidable. Firstly, it is likely to make minority language systems less popular and could even lead to their extinction. As a result, people may lose out on indispensable local customs and religious values unique to each country, which are primarily expressed through indigenous and official languages. Furthermore, the expansion of English worldwide may create inequalities between English-speaking nations, such as the United States and the United Kingdom, and non-English-speaking countries. This means that the former will enjoy privileges that the latter do not, ultimately hindering developing countries from fully participating in the global market and business opportunities.
On the other hand, despite these issues, I still maintain that the advantages of the global spread of English will outweigh its drawbacks. To begin with, English serves as a bridge, connecting people from all over the world. This fosters greater understanding and empathy among diverse cultures, helping to eliminate differences in norms, practices, beliefs, and values. Additionally, proficiency in English opens up opportunities for individuals, allowing them to pursue higher education and career aspirations with greater ease. For instance, students with strong English reading and listening skills have a better chance of attending courses at prestigious universities worldwide. In summary, English as a lingua franca undoubtedly has significant educational implications.
In conclusion, while there are some disadvantages resulting from the spread of English as an international language, I still believe that the benefits will offset, or even overshadow, its drawbacks.
