This chart depicts an estimation of people who cannot read, depending of their country and whether they are male or female.
Overall, we see that in all the regions showed in the picture, there are always an higher rate of illiteracy for men than women. We also observe that, in contrast with other regions, developed countries have the lowest percentage of people who cannot read.
First of all, we see that in Arab states, in a large proportion of Asia, in Oceania and Suh-Saharan Africa, there are a huge difference between men and women, regarding illiteracy. Indeed, there are around 20 percent less male being illiteracy except in East Asia and Ocenia, where there are more than two times as much women who cannot read. However, developed countries have almost a similar rate for both men and woomen.
In addition, we see that richer countries have also the lowest rate with no more than 3 percent for each genders. In comparison, South Asia, which has the highest rate, reaches nearly 55 percent for female and slightly less than 35 percent for women.
