This graph illustrates the approximate percentage of the state of not being able to read or write throughout the last year worldwide, characterized by gender and geographical areas.

Overall, South Asia has the highest illiteracy level, meanwhile developed countries has the lowest. Apart from that, education level of majority of the women in Arab states and South Asian region are the most vulnerable. Similarly, capability of not being able to read and write are significantly higher in women than men.

Women In South Asia, Arab States and Sub-Saharan Africa has the most illiteracy rates approximately of 65%, 52% and 48% . However, only around 3% of the population in developed countries lack the capability of reading and writing. In Arab States, illiteracy rate in women are more than 50% as opposed to less than 30% for men. Figures has more than halved in East Asia and Oceania zone.

By and large, lack of literacy in women compared to men are more significant in the underdeveloped countries.
