Band 7+: The best way to prevent people from smoking is to impose high taxes on tobacco products. In this way, people will be less likely to develop a long-term addiction to smoking. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

It is believed that the best method of mitigating the number of smokers is to raise taxes on tobacco products. In my opinion, the high tobacco taxes have the greatest impact on people and I totally agree with this point of view.

On the other hand, imposing high taxes on tobacco products may discourage people from smoking in different ways. One of the suggestions is that the government will increase the cost of purchasing cigarettes. This is an effective way to reduce smokers and avoid the development of long-term addiction to smoking. As a result, there will be some groups of populations such as students, poor people.. who will have no ability to afford luxury tobacco products try to stop smoking. For example, the NZ government increased the tobacco excise tax by 10% each year between 2010 and 2020, with efforts in tobacco control, resulting in the smoking rate declining from 36% in 2010 to 13% in 2020.

In addition, the other approach to frustrate smoking is that the revenue generated from these high taxes on tobacco products can be used to fund community health campaigns to promote healthier lifestyles. This means that these events can warn people about the harmful effects of smoking, which can be shared on social media. As a result, society is more aware of stopping smoking and encourages them to adopt healthy behaviors. For instance, substantial tax has increased in Vietnam, cutting cigaretI.te sales by 28% and decreasing the number of smokers by 3 million, with the largest reductions from 2020 until now.
