It is widely believed that raising the cost of vehicle fuels will be the optimal way to address the worldwide environmental pollution. While this is true to some extent, it is my belief that this method could put a burden on public transportation and solve the environmental issue ineffectively.
Increasing the fuel costs for vehicles can put pressure on the social transportation facilities. Since the prices of gas are higher, it would encourage people to use public vehicles such as subway trains, buses in order to reduce travel expenses. However, if a massive number of citizens decided to travel by public transportation every day, the social traffic infrastructure could not be able to cope with it when the facilities need to operate 24/7 with 100 percent of energy to accommodate the large number of passengers. Furthermore, the quality of services and equipment might decline when too many people utilizing it.
This idea can operate ineffectively in order to tackle environmental problems. The growth of vehicle energy cost can facilitate individuals to commute by public transportation, which only helps a small part in reducing the carbon footprint and improving the air quality. Nevertheless, emissions from vehicles are only a minimal cause that polluting the environment when. According to some research, it only accounting for under 10 percent of total outputs in the world, while industrial emissions are the main allarming problem of air pollution and need to be tackled more than increasing vehicle fuel prices. In addition, world environmental problems cover many issues such as water or earth pollution, as transportation emissions attributed for a minor part that polluting the air environment. Trying to solve the problem by increasing gas cost is not the most effective way to deal with this worldwide environmental crisis.
In conclusion, making the vehicle fuel more expensive cannot address the environmental issue optimally, as it can exert pressure on the public traffic system and only solve a small part of the overall problem. Hence, this belief is inappropriate and will be inefficient.
