These days, some people believe that the serious crime who pose a serious threat to society, must receive capital punishment. This can lead to a decline in the number of offenders and control their horrible behaviors. While I accept that this perception is somewhat justifiable, I would contend that there are various points against this notion.
On the one hand, innocent people could be wrongly convicted and executed so once executed , there is no way to rectify a wrongful conviction. For example, in the past, executing for the murder he didn’t commit, after that eyewitnesses later recanted their testimonies and evidence suggested the actual killer bore a striking resemblance to an innocent offender. Therefore, the government should conduct a thorough investigation and carefully consider the punishments to avoid unnecessary mistakes. In addition, executing prisoners creates a violent culture and encourages revenge. Instead of facing execution for the major crime , the state should give those more opportunities to reintegrate into society by teaching them to learn personal skills and specific job skills.
On the other hand, many people think capital punishment is not a good deterrent because researches have shown the death penalty is disproportionately applied to people of color and those from lower-paying jobs. For example, in the past, five young Black were wrongfully convicted of assaulting a woman, they spent years in prison before being exonerated by DNA evidence. Consequently, the death penalty is an unjust action which can undermine the principles of fairness and justice.
In conclusion, death penalty can lead to badly consequences such as innocent people could be wrongly convicted or executed or creates a violent culture and disproportionately applied to people of color and those from lower-paying jobs.
