Band 8+: The developments in technology are making life too complex for humans, so everyone should accept simple life without technology. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Some people argue that our lives have become increasingly complex since the emergence of technology, and abandoning technology is the only way to solve the problem. I admit that technology can make people’s lives more complicated, but I believe that rejecting it can bring far greater difficulties than it solves.

Admittedly, one major problem is that people find it increasingly difficult to disconnect from online platforms. Technology gives people a great opportunity to connect with each other regardless of where they are; however, this advantage can quickly turn into a drawback, as people create a new habit of always checking online messages when a notification appears. As a result, people may suffer from information overload because they have little time to relax and disconnect from digital communication. From this perspective, some individuals mention that abandoning technology would be a straightforward solution. However, this argument is based on a misconception about the difference between technology itself and its misuse. For instance, individuals with obesity cannot solve their health issues simply by abstaining from food altogether. Therefore, responsible use can reduce many of the negative effects of technology.

While technology may bring new complexities, I am convinced that it also simplifies human life. Nowadays, when applying to a university or searching for jobs, people have to complete lengthy administrative procedures that may involve multiple visits to government offices, extensive paperwork, and long waiting times for responses. This problem also occurs in banking, healthcare, and public administration. Online services eliminate the need for in-person visits, reduce paperwork and shorten waiting times. As a result, people can complete essential tasks more efficiently while spending less time and money on administrative procedures. Moreover, technology can help reduce inequalities. For example, in the past, students in rural areas often had more limited access to high-quality educational materials than those in cities. By contrast, technology can significantly narrow the urban-rural educational gap by giving students wider access to learning resources.

In conclusion, although technology can complicate modern life when used irresponsibly, abandoning it entirely would be an overreaction. A far wiser approach is to develop healthier digital habits while continuing to embrace convenience, opportunity and efficiency that technology brings.
